I just received an email about a website called "UCrime" as a way to track crimes in and around universities. I tested it out by typing in Cal Berkeley – and saw some crimes in the area… Parents and College Students can use this to get an idea of the crimes – or "cell phone alerts" if a major crime is taking place. The UCrime site disclaimer includes a statement that the information contained in their web feed is being used at one’s own risk. But Fox45 News Baltimore did an interesting story on the site that seems like the information can be helpful.
I think information like this should also be compared to University website news updates, each campus will have them. Cal Berkeley also provides the ability to "RSS" feed the news updates to a user’s home page.
I found another site called "SecurityOnCampus.org" that also has crime information for universities and colleges. College Safety Tips offers tips. Another company called "Rave Wireless" contracts out to universities to provide emergency alert systems. The "Rave Campus™ " solution is a complete suite of academic, safety, community, and
social applications specially designed for students’ mobile phones.
I have not used any of these solutions, so I can’t say what is the best option. But it seems that having a moblie phone is a must for all college students.
